President Muhammadu Buhari's New year messages to Nigerian
Welcome to the beginning of a New Year of the continuation of CHANGE in our beloved nation. I am aware that Nigerians have experienced a number of significant hardships over the past months. Living in the State House has not alienated me from your daily sufferings. I am aware of the lengthy queues at fuel stations and of the difficulties businesses have faced in acquiring foreign exchange.
These challenges are only temporary; we are working to make things better. When I presented myself to you as a presidential candidate and asked you to vote for me, I wanted to be a leader who keeps his promises. I wanted to be a leader who restores the people's hope in those elected to serve them. I wanted to be a leader who initiates positive and enduring CHANGE.
I am still totally committed to being that kind of leader. Unforeseen circumstances and other distractions notwithstanding, I shall still do my utmost best to keep every promise I made to Nigerians during my election campaign. In the past seven months since our inauguration on May 29, 2015, my administration has focused on laying the right foundation for the CHANGE you voted for during our historic presidential election. Nigerians will in due course begin to enjoy the fruits of all our ongoing work.
The effective and efficient implementation of our 2016 budget proposals will address many of the socio-economic issues that are of current concern to our people. One area in which Nigerians, especially those in the northeast, have already begun to experience major CHANGE is in the war on terror. I commend our Armed Forces for significantly curtailing the insurgency which has ravaged the northeast of Nigeria over the past few years.
However, there is still a lot of work to be done in the area of security. Our Armed Forces will maintain, consolidate and build on their successes in the war against Boko Haram and violent extremism. This government will not consider the matter concluded until the terrorists have been completely routed and normalcy restored to all parts of the country that have been adversely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Our crackdown on corruption will continue to be vigorously undertaken. I urge the courts to support our efforts and help in the recovery of stolen funds by speedily concluding trials and showing that impunity no longer has a place in our country.
There is much work to do in other areas as well and I have charged all my ministers and other appointees to ensure that Nigerians experience positive changes in their lives in 2016. We must reduce our country's reliance on oil. We must diversify our economy.
And we must do all we can to promote job creation. Our challenges are many but our determination to succeed is strong and unshaken. So too is our confidence in God. I wish you all a very
Happy New Year.

NDLEA rescued a female Facebook lover from trafficking drug to Malaysia
THE Acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Roli Bode-George, has alerted members of the public to some drug cartels that has invaded Facebook and other social media platforms for the recruitment of drug mules.
Mrs. Bode-George raised the alarm as the agency foiled attempt by a drug trafficking organization to recruit a 37-year-old lady, Ezeabata Uju Gloria, on Facebook as a drug courier under the guise of marriage proposal.
She was to smuggle 1.325kg of methamphetamine to Malaysia through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, when she was apprehended.
The arrest turned out to be a lifeline for the suspect as drug trafficking is punishable by death in Malaysia. A suspected leader of the cartel, who masterminded the aborted smuggling of methamphetamine to Malaysia, was equally arrested.
According to Bode-George, “the agency has uncovered plot by drug trafficking organisations to use the social media for recruitment of drug mules. After a painstaking surveillance, we have successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs to Malaysia by a courier recruited online via Facebook.
Members of the public should be wary of these antics, ascertain a wholesome relationship and report suspicious cases to the agency. Some of the tricks to watch out for include marriage proposals to unsuspecting female victims, unsolicited generosity like cash and other gift items as well as offering all-expense paid trip to Asia, Europe, America and South Africa.”
NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, said Ezeabata Uju Gloria was arrested following the discovery of methamphetamine in her luggage. In his words, “Gloria was arrested during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Malaysia at the departure hall. Substances that tested positive for methamphetamine weighing 1.325kg were detected in her luggage.
The drug was concealed in 26 packs of Indomie noodles in a bag of foodstuff containing plantain, pepper, melon and other spices. Further investigation led to the arrest of one Mr. Philip Maduabuchi Akpaka, 39, who allegedly coordinated the travel arrangement for Gloria and gave her the bag containing the drugs.”
In her statement, Gloria who works with an accounting firm in Lagos admitted having a Facebook relationship that got her involved in drug trafficking. “I met a man on Facebook some months ago who lives in Malaysia. He told me while chatting online that he is from my state, Anambra in South East Nigeria. After some months, he proposed to marry me and I requested that he comes to Nigeria to meet with my parents as our custom demands.
He promised to fulfill every marriage rite. Months later, he invited me to Malaysia promising to pay all the travel expenses. After several appeals, I decided to visit him. The day I was to travel, he told me to take along a bag of foodstuff sent by his mother from the village. I was given the bag at the airport but in the process of checking it in, drug was discovered inside packs of noodles in the bag and I was arrested” Gloria stated.
Philip also admitted preparing the travel documents of Gloria on the request of his friend based in Malaysia. “I am a transporter. My friend in Malaysia asked me to prepare travel documents for Gloria. He also asked me to give a bag to Gloria to take to Malaysia” Philip stated.
Both suspects will soon be charged to court for conspiracy, unlawful possession and exportation of narcotic drugs.

I’m here for my medical treatment not to plot against President Buhari , says Atiku
Former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and All Progressive Congress(APC) chieftain Alhaji Atiku Abubakar asked his political opponents to stop peddling rumours and lies about him plotting against President Mohammadu Buhari.
He said this in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday.
He dismissed an allegation that he had been hosting political meetings at Burj Al-Arab, Dubai, to frustrate Buhari.
Atiku said, “This is the work of rumour-mongers planning to cause distrust and distraction in Buhari’s government. They do not mean well for the APC administration. With the challenges of providing good governance for the country and creating job opportunities for Nigerians, including reducing the impact of poverty, President Buhari needs all the goodwill and support in these endeavours.”
According to the former vice-president, the success of Buhari’s administration has been his preoccupation.
He said that contrary to the rumours being peddled by his political opponents, he was currently in Dubai with his family for physiotherapy on his injured knee.
He said it was unfortunate that at a time that energy should be channelled into helping the President actualise his change agenda, some were busy spreading deliberate falsehood to cause distraction.
He warned that his private affairs should not be politicised by anybody to achieve sinister objectives.
Atiku said he was entitled to enjoy his private life, including the right to attend to his health without being harassed and lied against by political opponents.
The statement read, “This is yet another plot by the enemies of our country and democracy to divide, divert attention and distract the APC in its avowed commitment to secure the country, provide jobs for the unemployed youths, build the needed critical infrastructure, enthrone a regime of probity and accountability and pull the country out of the economic woods it has been consigned to by locust years of mismanagement.
“Whether at home or abroad, the Turaki is preoccupied with his unassailable support to President Buhari and his administration, especially at this critical time, as he works assiduously to turn the fortunes of our dear country around and make Nigeria work for the greater good of all.
“Rumour-mongers are toxic to the progress of the APC and the country at large. The campaigns are gone, and therefore, all energies should be constructively devoted to the success of the Buhari administration.”
